Construction Guild Traunstein–Berchtesgadener Land warns of price decline: Call for reliable framework conditions

The Construction Guild Traunstein–Berchtesgadener Land sees the regional construction industry still under considerable pressure. At its annual general meeting in Traunstein, Master Craftsman Thomas Maier painted a picture that goes beyond a cyclical dip: In addition to weak demand, it is above all intensified price competition that burdens the companies – and from the guild's perspective, political uncertainty is added, making investments and personnel planning more difficult.

Economic situation and political uncertainty

Maier remained in office as Master Craftsman and used the annual outlook for a clear message to politics: Companies need "reliable framework parameters." This means less a single program and more the expectation that funding frameworks, standards, and cost factors do not change in short cycles or remain unclear. For companies that calculate projects over months, keep materials and personnel on hand, and often work with tight margins, even a small shift in financing, funding rates, or requirements can tip profitability.

Price decline mainly affects companies with little leeway

The fact that the guild explicitly warns of a "price decline" is an alarm signal in construction practice: Falling offer prices can bring orders in the short term, but squeeze calculations in an environment where wages, material costs, and financing do not automatically fall as well. If companies only win orders through aggressive discounts, the risk increases that necessary reserves are lacking – for example, for warranties, additional work, or unforeseen construction site risks. This is precisely the core of the guild's warning: Competition is getting tougher, while entrepreneurial predictability is not increasing.

Role of the Construction Guild

The Construction Guild, as a public law corporation and association of independent construction craftsmen from the districts of Traunstein and Berchtesgadener Land, sees itself as the representative of the interests of regional companies. When it describes the situation in such stark terms, it is also an indication that the pressure has reached the grassroots – meaning not only individual segments, but the breadth of craft-based construction companies is affected.

Supranational figures support the picture of a tense situation

The development in Bavaria and nationwide provides additional context for the concerns of regional companies. The Bavarian State Office for Statistics reported a decline in order intake in the Bavarian main construction industry of 15.7 percent in March 2026 compared to the previous month, down to 2.31 billion euros. Nationwide, the picture was mixed: According to the construction industry, real order intake in February 2026 was 9.8 percent above the previous year's month, but a real decline in turnover was recorded in residential construction. For January and February 2026 combined, despite a real order increase of 2.7 percent, there was a slight real turnover decline of 0.3 percent.

Education as a strategic counterbalance: Securing qualifications despite the crisis

Parallel to the guild meeting, the general meeting of the Vocational Training Institute of the Construction Industry took place in Traunstein. The fact that both dates coincide is more than routine: The industry is thus sending a signal that qualification and securing young talent should not be postponed to "better times." The Vocational Training Institute is dedicated to the vocational education of local construction trainees and the further training of employees – an area in which companies must invest in the long term, even if the order situation fluctuates in the short term.

The meeting in Traunstein was thus a double stocktaking: economically a warning against a market that is increasingly working "downwards" through price; structurally the commitment to retain skilled workers and quality. Whether the situation will noticeably ease in 2026, from the guild's point of view, depends not only on the economy, but on whether politics and framework conditions for companies become more predictable again. Until then, the guild's core demand remains: more reliability – so that companies can invest, train, and calculate projects with greater certainty again.
